When the salts are sprinkled, water is pulled out from the cells of the snail through the process of osmosis. The snails now tend to protect itself by producing a slimy substance. In the process of producing the slimy substance, bubbling occurs from the slime; the sound can be heard in the video below, and air is being forced out of body of the snail as it shrivels up.
